Multi Academy Trusts Student Planners

Products made for everyday school life

Catholic Planner - Intro Image

We know that planners, exercise books and learning resources need to do more than look good when they arrive

They need to stand up to everyday use in classrooms, school bags, lockers and staff rooms. They need to be practical, easy to use and produced to the specification the school has agreed.

Penstripe has specialised in educational planners since 1993, building on a printing heritage dating back to the 1980s. That experience has helped us develop products around the realities of school life.

Our approach is simple: use the right materials, choose binding and finishing methods that suit the product, check the artwork carefully and produce something designed to last.

  • Designed to last the academic year Durability is an important part of the way we develop our planners and books. Student planners in particular are handled every day, carried between lessons and regularly put into bags and lockers. We therefore offer binding and cover options developed around regular school use. Depending on the product, these include secure spiral binding, ToughBind adhesive binding, hardback case binding and other binding styles suited to different types of books. Our spiral-bound planners use secure endlocks designed to prevent the wire from simply being unwound. Rounded corners also help reduce damaged or dog-eared edges during the school year. For our protective covers, we use 100% recycled polypropylene, providing a durable material designed to help protect products throughout regular school use.

  • Binding options for different uses Different products need different types of binding. That is why we do not rely on one format for every planner, exercise book or knowledge organiser. Our current options include: Secure spiral binding – a robust and flexible option used across many of our student planners. ToughBind – a lay-flat adhesive binding designed so that a page cannot be removed without leaving evidence. Case binding – combines a durable hardback cover with adhesive binding for a more substantial finish. Wiro binding – available for selected products including knowledge organisers. Square-back binding – suitable for larger knowledge organisers and designed to open flat for easier use. Perfect binding – available where a more traditional book-style finish is required. The right option depends on how the product will be used, how many pages it contains and the finish the school wants. Our team can talk schools through those choices before an order is finalised.

  • Materials chosen for the job We offer different materials and specifications because schools do not all have the same requirements. Depending on the product, this can include recycled polypropylene protective covers, hardback covers, different paper options, full-colour printing and a choice of sizes and formats. Our knowledge organisers, for example, can be printed in full colour throughout on quality paper, while our planners are available with different binding, cover and internal-content options. Exercise books can also be tailored by size, subject, year group and internal specification. We purchase our paper from FSC- or PEFC-certified sources and use 100% recycled polypropylene for our protective covers. Rather than forcing every customer into one standard product, we help schools choose a specification that suits the way the product will actually be used.

Printing and artwork

Good print quality starts before anything goes to press.

For personalised products, our UK-based artwork team supports customers through the design and proofing process.

Schools can check their artwork before production begins, which helps make sure the finished product reflects the approved content, branding and specification.

Where products include detailed educational content, diagrams, subject material or school-specific information, clarity and consistency are particularly important.

We also offer full-colour printing on products such as knowledge organisers where colour forms an important part of the design or learning material.

Quality control

We want the finished product to match what has been agreed.

That means the important checks happen at more than one stage: the specification has to be right, the artwork has to be approved and the finished product has to reflect the agreed order.

For personalised products, customers are given the opportunity to review and approve their artwork before production begins. This helps establish an agreed specification for the finished product.

If a customer believes that goods do not match the approved specification or have a manufacturing defect, we ask them to contact us so we can investigate.

Our existing Terms & Conditions also set out the contractual position where goods are damaged, defective or do not materially conform to the agreed description or specification.

Standards and responsible sourcing

We believe that quality should also include consideration of the materials used and how products are produced.

Where appropriate, we look at paper, cover materials, binding methods, durability and recyclability when developing product options.

Our current approach to materials includes two important commitments:

  • Paper sourced from FSC- or PEFC-certified suppliers: We purchase our paper from sources that hold recognised forestry-related certification. Although Penstripe does not hold its own FSC or PEFC certification, we recognise the importance of responsible paper sourcing.
  • 100% recycled polypropylene protective covers: All of our polypropylene protective covers are made from 100% recycled polypropylene, providing a durable cover material while making use of recycled content.

For schools that have specific environmental or procurement requirements, our team can discuss the available materials and product options as part of the quotation process.

Accreditations and certifications

We believe in being transparent about the standards and certifications that apply to our products and business.

Penstripe does not currently hold its own FSC, PEFC, ISO or other formal quality or environmental accreditation.

However, this does not mean that responsible materials are overlooked.

Our paper is purchased from FSC- or PEFC-certified sources, and our polypropylene protective covers contain 100% recycled material.

It is important to distinguish between a business holding a certification itself and sourcing materials from suppliers that hold relevant certifications.

We therefore do not claim independent FSC, PEFC or ISO certification for Penstripe or its finished products.

If your school has particular sourcing or procurement requirements, please speak to our team so we can explain the materials available and discuss the specifications that may be suitable.

Experience that supports our standards

Formal certifications can be useful, but product quality is also demonstrated through experience and repeat use.

We have specialised in educational planners since 1993 and have worked with schools, colleges and academy trusts for more than three decades.

Over that time, our products have been developed around the practical needs of teachers and students, including durability, ease of use, personalisation, artwork management and reliable delivery.

Customers regularly comment on product quality, service and the support they receive from our team.

Samples are available

The best way to judge a planner, exercise book or learning resource is often to see and handle it.

We provide samples so schools can look at different formats, materials, binding styles and product options before deciding what is right for them.

If you are comparing options or have a specific requirement, speak to our team and we can help you choose the most suitable specification.

Questions about a specification?

If you have a particular requirement for paper, binding, materials, print, durability or sustainability, talk to us before ordering.

We can explain the available options and help you identify the specification that is most appropriate for your school or organisation.
