Growth mindset is a well-known psychological theory of learning, utilised by teachers for many years. It was first proposed by Dr Carol Dweck, a Stanford University psychologist and it states that there are two types of mindset: a growth mindset and a fixed mindset.
The growth mindset believes that you can improve your performance and your intelligence.
The fixed mindset believes that intelligence and abilities are ‘fixed’ and unchanging.
People who are told that they are intelligent have been shown in studies to be less likely to take risks on new tasks, or persist at a task they find difficult, compared to people who were praised for putting hard work in.
The common sense behind this approach is clear: if someone believes that they are already as good as they are ever going to get, then they are not going to have as much of a drive to improve.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, there is evidence that the more flexible growth mindset is linked with higher self-esteem and fewer symptoms of depression. Feeling as though you can change outcomes gives children more of a feeling of control over their environment and their future.
